SHALOM
The School Sisters of Notre Dame, as an international congregation, has formed an international network for Justice, Peace, and the Integrity of Creation called SHALOM. Shalom is the Hebrew word for Peace and implies restoring all things to their original integrity, to the way God intends the world to be.
Every SSND Sister and Associate is a member of SHALOM. The SHALOM Global Peace and Justice contact for the SSND Canadian Province is Mary Heather MacKinnon, SSND.
Through SHALOM we take actions that lead to
- reconciliation,
- solidarity with the oppressed,
- the promotion of human dignity, and
- collaboration with ecological movements to safeguard the earth.
In other words, we actively promote the culture of life.
How do we decide what actions to take?
The process of discerning the actions we take is prayerful, reflective and dialogic. The process includes
- gathering information about the issue under consideration,
- analyzing the data,
- reflecting on the experience in the context of faith, Sacred Scripture, the Social Teachings of the Church, and our constitution.
Some of the areas in which we are now engaged:
- cancellation of the unjust foreign debt
- human rights education
- reverence for creation
- the widening gap between rich and poor
Upcoming event: April 24, 2008 - Living Beyond the “End of the World,” a Spirituality of Hope, Speaker: Margaret Swedish
